Biography

Oliver Cromwell was born on April 25 in the year of 1599. in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire into a family of minor gentry. He decided to study at Cambridge University. In his mid-life he experienced a religious renewal and believed that he had a purpose sent down from God. He is known well because Civil war would break out between Charles I and parliament in 1642.  He was in good with the short parliament and long parliament. Even though he lacked military experience, he created a cavalry, and rose from the rank of captain to lieutenant in a matter of three years. To Cromwell the alliance that the king had with the Scots and his subsequent defeat in the Second Civil War, made Cromwell decide that the King needed to be brought to justice. He was a main proponent in the trial and execution of Charles the I. Cromwell also defeated the supporters of the king’s son Charles II.  He then became Lord Protector Cromwell. He helped to reorganize the national church. He readmitted Jews into Britain and presided over a limited amount of religious tolerance. He ended the war with Holland and Portugal.

Trial and Execution

Cromwell died on September 3 1658. His beheading happened after he was originally buried. He was then  dug up and hanged. He was beheaded because of the fact that he had died by natural causes and did not get executed for getting rid of the king.

Historic Significance

Cromwell was beheaded because he was part of royalty, and that was the justifiable way to die. He was also a figurehead for the king when he was known as lord protector. Another reason that may be in common with most beheadings was religious differences. He was a very big component of religion and was also guided by it. The good thing for Cromwell was that he had religious tolerance somewhat. He was dug up by royalist after he was dead and then beheaded, probably to show that there is a specific order in the government and that no one can change that.
